Group Exercise Classes at Council-Run Facilities: A Guide
From yoga in Sempione to spinning along the Navigli, Milan’s council-run exercise classes are booming—here’s how to get started.
From yoga in Sempione to spinning along the Navigli, Milan’s council-run exercise classes are booming—here’s how to get started.

On a recent Thursday evening, more than 50 Milanese laced up sneakers and unrolled mats at Arena Civica, united by a common goal: moving together, guided by energetic council-appointed instructors. It's a familiar scene across Milan this summer, as council-run facilities report record interest in group fitness programming, especially among adults looking for a sense of routine and community post-pandemic.
This boom comes at a moment when Italians are prioritising social wellness, not just individual health. The city’s public fitness centres—comunali palestre, managed by MilanoSport and local council networks—are uniquely positioned to offer affordable, structured exercise in safe, accessible venues. Organisers point to the Milanese tradition of social activity, from Sempione Park’s jogging groups to the crowds at Bar Basso’s outdoor tables, as fertile ground for structured community movement.
Arena Civica "Gianni Brera" on Viale Byron, one of Milan’s oldest public sporting sites, now hosts after-work HIIT sessions as well as gentle pilates beneath the trees. It’s part of MilanoSport’s citywide push, with 28 gym and pool facilities including Palestra Murat in Maggiolina offering group circuit training, zumba, and water aerobics every day. Out in the Navigli district, Centro Sportivo Iseo on Via Iseo has become a magnet for local cyclists and younger professionals who flock to its weekly group rides and spinning classes—many of which are held on its rooftop terrace, overlooking the city skyline at sunset.
Registration for these classes typically opens at the start of each month on the MilanoSport portal, though residents can also sign up in person at most council gyms. Fees start as low as €3.50 per session for yoga or pilates at Palestra Murat, with multi-class packs and discounts for under-26s and over-65s available at most sites. The city’s "Sport per Tutti" initiative, launched in January, includes at least five free outdoor classes per week for residents at parks including Parco Sempione, Giardini Pubblici Indro Montanelli, and Boscoincittà.
The numbers tell the story. According to figures from MilanoSport, council-run group fitness registrations in Milan jumped by 27% between January and June 2026, with nearly 19,000 slots filled at the city’s 28 municipally managed facilities. Affordable pricing is a major draw—compared to private gyms, where memberships can easily top €600 per year, Milanese can join an eight-week council course for under €45. Moreover, attendance is up sharply in neighbourhoods like Bicocca and Lorenteggio, where social clubs and council venues have coordinated group exercise events as part of city-wide mental health campaigns.
Participants cite convenience and friendship as key motivators. Organisers, for their part, are working to further broaden access, with new classes in languages other than Italian launching this autumn at select facilities—reflecting the city’s growing international community.
Looking to join a class? Visit the MilanoSport official website or your local council (municipio) to view the full schedule for July and August. Most public venues encourage arriving early, especially for outdoor classes at Parco Sempione and Arena Civica, which regularly reach capacity. Beginners are welcome at all council-run sessions, and some events—especially those run under "Sport per Tutti"—provide mats and props. For families, Saturday mornings typically feature parent-child fitness games at Centro Sportivo Iseo and Palestra Murat. As always, residents are advised to consult their GP or a local health professional before embarking on any new fitness routine.
