If you’ve walked through Parco Sempione on a Saturday morning lately, you might have spotted groups of strangers dropping into planks or lunging across the grass. Free outdoor fitness is having a moment in Milan, and July’s calendar is packed with opportunities to join in—no gym membership (or even prior experience) required.

Organisers say these open-access sessions are more than a chance to work up a sweat. They’re about reclaiming public space for wellness after years marked by inconsistent routines and long hours behind screens. With Milan’s summer daylight stretching well past 9pm, residents are rediscovering the appeal of collective movement—and the social boost that comes with group classes, runs and rides.

Summer in Motion: Where and When

Two programs dominate this month’s lineup. Milano Fitness City, an initiative backed by the Comune di Milano and several local gyms, is staging free weekday classes every evening in Parco Sempione through July 29. Sessions run from 19:00 to 20:00 on the central lawn behind the Triennale, ranging from HIIT and Pilates to Zumba and bodyweight bootcamps. Pre-registration is recommended via the Milano Fitness City website, but latecomers can usually join if they bring a yoga mat.

Down by the Navigli canals, the ASD Navigli Run Club is offering two weekly group runs—Tuesdays at 20:00 from Alzaia Naviglio Grande 4 and Saturdays at 9:00 from Piazza Ventiquattro Maggio. Both are beginner-friendly, with distances from 5km to 8km and a promised no-drop pace. The club’s Sunday morning yoga sessions in Darsena (free, starting at 8:30am near Viale Gorizia) fill up quickly, so early arrival is key.

Also new this month: CityLife’s outdoor fitness festival on July 13-14. The park beneath the Allianz Tower will host free circuit training, dance fitness and ‘walk & stretch’ groups between 10:00 and 18:00. Organisers anticipate around 500 participants across the weekend.

Why the Big Turnout?

Participation in Milan’s free fitness events tracks with a wider rise in physical activity across the city, especially among people in their 20s and 30s. According to ISTAT’s 2025 regional survey, 56% of Milanese adults report regular moderate exercise—up 4 percentage points from 2022. Cost remains a barrier for many, with city gym memberships averaging €55 per month, so zero-fee community fitness is drawing large, diverse crowds.

"We see people who have never run a kilometre before," says one local volunteer organiser (who preferred not to give their name), citing attendance lists that now stretch into triple digits for weekend events. And it’s clear these gatherings meet social as well as physical needs: informal aperitivo groups routinely form at bars lining Corso Sempione or Piazza Sant’Agostino afterwards.

How to Join In

Most events ask for a quick sign-up online, though drop-in participants are welcome for activities in Parco Sempione and CityLife, provided space permits. Participation is free, but bringing your own mat, towel and water bottle is advised. Shoes suitable for trails are essential for running groups along the Navigli—those cobblestones can be slick in the early morning.

If you’re looking for other options, check the Comune di Milano’s updated calendar at milanocittadelleattivita.it for pop-up events in lesser-known neighbourhood parks like Giardino delle Culture (Porta Romana) and Parco Lambro (Lambrate). Most sessions run until the last week of July, ahead of Milan’s traditional August slowdown.

As always, anyone with health concerns should consult a local medical professional before starting new activities. For everyone else, Milan’s July forecast—plenty of sun, little rain—makes this the ideal time to try something new, make a few friends and enjoy some of the city’s best green spaces on the move.
