Milan Opens Safe Cycling Routes for Families Across Parks This Summer
Parco Sempione and Navigli canal paths provide flat, low-traffic loops ideal for parents with children and new riders this summer.
How we reported this

Milan added 8 kilometres of protected bike lanes around Parco Sempione and the Navigli this spring, giving families and beginners dedicated space away from car traffic.
The push comes as more residents seek outdoor activity during the long daylight hours of July, when temperatures stay moderate until late afternoon and the city's aperitivo culture overlaps with early evening rides. Public health data from the Lombardy region shows a 22 percent rise in family park visits since May 2025, driven by free wellness programs that pair cycling with social gatherings near water.
Two routes stand out for their gentle grades and clear signage. The 3.2-kilometre loop inside Parco Sempione starts at the Arco della Pace and follows the park's perimeter path past the Sforza Castle gardens before returning along Viale Goethe. Further south, the Navigli route runs 5 kilometres from Piazza XXIV Maggio along the paved towpath beside the Naviglio Grande, passing the lock at Viarenna and ending near the Darsena basin where rental stands operate daily.
Navigli District Paths
Both routes avoid steep hills and busy intersections. The Navigli section stays separated from motor traffic by bollards installed in 2024, while Parco Sempione closes its central carriageway to cars on weekends. Bike-sharing stations managed by the city sit at both ends of each route, with child seats and helmets available for a 2-euro surcharge.
City transport figures released in June 2026 record 1,450 family passes sold for the bike-share system since January, up from 920 the previous year. Hourly rental rates remain 4.50 euros for standard bikes at Parco Sempione kiosks and 5 euros along the Navigli, with discounts for residents who register through the Milan Mobility app.
Practical Tips for First-Timers
Riders should start before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. to avoid peak heat. Water fountains operate at the Sempione playground and near the Naviglio bridge at Via Vigevano. Parents can combine a short ride with an aperitivo stop at canal-side bars that offer shaded outdoor tables. The local health service recommends checking bicycle fit at any of the 12 certified repair points listed on the municipal website before heading out with young children. Riders new to the routes can download the free Milan Parks map updated on 1 July 2026, which marks rest areas and emergency call points every 500 metres.
