Cinque Terre Day Trip from Milan: Five Villages, Coastal Trails & the Ligurian Sea
Cinque Terre — the five clifftop fishing villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore on the Ligurian coast — is among Italy's most photographed landscapes, and for good reason: the combination of vibrantly coloured village houses stacked above turquoise water, with terraced vineyards covering every available slope, produces views of such concentrated beauty that they feel almost unreal. From Milan, the journey by high-speed train to La Spezia takes 90 minutes, followed by a short regional train or ferry to the villages. An early departure (6am from Milan) allows a full day on the coast before returning in the evening.
The practical realities of Cinque Terre require planning. The famous Sentiero Azzurro coastal path, connecting all five villages, has sections that close regularly due to landslides and erosion — check ahead at the Cinque Terre National Park website. The villages get extremely crowded in July and August; May, early June, and September are dramatically more pleasant. Swimming is best from Fegina beach in Monterosso (the largest and sandiest) or the rocks below Manarola. The local wine — Sciacchetrà, a sweet passito made from grapes dried on the cliffsides — is expensive and rare and worth seeking at small producers in Vernazza or Riomaggiore. The anchovy culture, centred on Monterosso, produces preserved fish of a quality that will alter your understanding of what a canned anchovy can be. Cinque Terre is crowded for excellent reasons — and the day trip from Milan remains one of Italy's great travel experiences.
