Lake Como Day Trip from Milan: Varenna, Bellagio & the Scenic Highlights
Lake Como is one of Europe's most beautiful lakes and one of the world's great luxury destinations — a deep, Y-shaped glacial lake cradled between steep wooded mountains just 50km north of Milan, lined with aristocratic villas, botanical gardens, and small lakeside towns that have drawn European aristocracy, artists, and celebrities since the Roman era. A day trip from Milan to Lake Como is one of the finest possible uses of a spare day in northern Italy.
The most visited destination on the lake is Bellagio — a picturesque promontory town at the fork of the lake's two arms, with narrow cobblestone lanes climbing steeply from the waterfront, gorgeous villa gardens including the Villa Serbelloni and Villa Melzi, and waterfront restaurants and gelato shops with views over the water. However, the equally beautiful Varenna on the lake's eastern shore is considerably less crowded and arguably more atmospheric — its waterfront promenade, the Villa Monastero terrace garden, and the medieval tower above the village all justify the slightly longer ferry ride from the opposite shore.
From Milan's Centrale station, regular Trenord trains reach Varenna-Esino station in approximately 60–70 minutes, making it one of Italy's most accessible lake escapes. The ferry service connecting the lake's main towns (Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio, and Como town) runs throughout the day and offers one of the most scenic boat rides in Europe at very modest prices. The lake is beautiful in all seasons but peak summer (July–August) brings significant crowds — late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September) offer the best balance of good weather and manageable visitor numbers.
