Navigli Milan: Canals, Aperitivo Bars & Weekend Guide
The Navigli district is Milan's most atmospheric neighbourhood, a network of historic canals lined with vintage shops, antique dealers, and the city's most celebrated aperitivo bars. Once an industrial waterway used to transport marble for the Duomo's construction, the Navigli has transformed into the city's premier destination for evening leisure and weekend wandering through its characterful lanes.
The two main canals — Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese — are at their best in the early evening when the aperitivo hour begins. Milan invented the modern aperitivo concept, and in the Navigli it reaches its most convivial expression. Order a Campari Spritz or Negroni and help yourself to the generous buffets of cheese, cured meats, pasta, and vegetables that accompany every drink at no extra charge — effectively replacing dinner for a fraction of the cost.
Sunday morning brings one of Italy's largest and most atmospheric antique markets stretching along the full length of the canal towpath. The neighbourhood also hosts excellent restaurants specialising in traditional Milanese cooking — look for risotto alla Milanese and osso buco on the menus of the old-fashioned trattorie tucked behind the canalside main streets where generations of local families have eaten for decades.
